Here is just a sample of what people
are saying about the new Commandments project:
“This book/CD
package is well researched, clear in its goals, and
enlightening and inspiring in its approach. As the drummer
in Royal Crown Revue, one of the prominent neo-swing/rockabilly
bands of the 1990s, Daniel Glass has been steeped in
these musical waters for years, and he's got the same
knowledge that drove Zoro's original publishing success.
Keep this one on your bottom shelf; you’re going
to want to return to it again and again.”
- Modern Drummer, ****1/2 stars (out of 5)
“Simply put, this
is an essential requirement for every drummer’s
library.”
-Drummer Magazine (UK) ***** (out of 5)
"A wonderful resource
and an excellent book!"
- Peter Erskine (legendary drummer with Stan Kenton,
Weather Report, Joni Mitchell, Steely Dan)
"I am so impressed
with what Daniel and Zoro have done to secure the heritage
of the modern drum set - every inspired drummer needs
to experience and learn from this masterpiece. Thank
you both for your hard work, so that generations ahead
of us can forever enjoy this magical era!"
- Dom Famularo, Drumming's Global Ambassador
What a great surprise
to meet Daniel Glass and and hear his music. His
new book The Commandments of Early rhythm and
Blues Drumming is just what the doctor ordered
if you want to know about blues, funk and New Orleans
drumming, not to mention what happened in the rhythm
section on those Chess dates. His book deals
with how to get the feel and sound of different
types of shuffles, backbeats, triplet and straight eighth
grooves, drawing from early recordings of blues and
jump, the music out of which rock was born. These
grooves have always been elusive and Daniel nails them.
I grew up on these records so I know the real deal when
I hear it. Daniel's feel jumps out at
you as authentic. Not an easy feat, trust me!!
With this knowledge as a foundation, you can play
anything and it will be solid and have depth. This book
is essential for anyone who is serious about understanding
the development of music with soul.
- Mike Clark (legendary blues, funk and jazz drummer
with Herbie Hancock's Headhunters)
"Simply Amazing,
man!"
- Freddie Gruber
"Daniel, I am really
enjoying the work that you and Zoro are doing in bringing
the history of drumming, especially R+B and to the Blues
to the younger generation. I have been playing drums
for over 40 years and never really knew exactly what
all my drumming heroes were playing because you couldn't
hear properly. I remember the night we were all sitting
around listening to Chuck Berry and finally the singer
in the band said "the drummer is playing a shuffle!!".
What a breakthrough! The next night I started playing
the shuffle beat to Berry's songs and everyone in the
band had a smile on their face because the song finally
sounded right!!"
- Danny B, Ontario, Canada
Studying this book will
not only provide source information about R&B drumming,
but will serve as a great departure for further study.
Congratulations to Zoro and Glass for providing this
outstanding source and documentation of an important
style of American music."

it's fantastic and I
have already got a lot from it. I will be recommending
